Opening the car door
This one is for the lads.
My dad always opened (and closed) my mum’s car door. When she got divorced and started dating she told me stories where she’d stand by the door for minutes waiting for the man to open or shut her door. She was horrified.
I thought she was old fashioned. I’m a tom boy and totally capable of opening my own door and my mum is from a different era but I have learned to appreciate and expect a door opened in certain situations. In fact one of my ex-boyfriends thanked me today for teaching him to open the door because all his current dates and girlfriends love it.
There are certain times when it feels appropriate and nice to be treated like a lady. When I’m dressed up for example. Heels are hard and no matter how long I date someone I like them to treat me extra special when I’m all dolled up. One time my thankful ex opened the car door and I got in with my swanky outfit and a smile. It faded when he forgot to close it and I lumbered out of the bucket seat trying to remain dainty in my cocktail dress and shut the big door. (His car does have big doors). I will certainly compliment my man when he’s dressed up and opening the door is essentially a complement.
Apparently a lot of guys don’t learn this door thing growing up. Many perfectly nice, interesting and thoughtful guys never open the door or walk you to it. I am put off by a date who picks me up with out getting out of the car. Dropping me off without getting out is more understandable because people are afraid of the awkward good night at the door scenario. But come on….get out of the car when you first see me. At least pretend your excited.
The moral of the story – men – get out of the car when you pick up a women. Ring her bell. Open the car door for her. Shut it. Treat her like a lady and she will treat you like a man. You might even get laid eventually.
yeah….just like i do
